Robert Kuan invited to inspire Dagupenos
The founder of Chowking and now the Chairman of St Lukes Hospital was invited by Mayor Lim to speak on his experience.
Robert Kuan was more than willing, he stated that being a recipient of city resolution adopting him as an Honorary Son of Dagupan passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, he considers himself as a Dagupeno.
Lessons he imparted.
1. He noticed that the City's sidewalks are congested and also made mention of Junk shops cluttering the streets. If we consider ourselves as a Queen City of the North, then we better act like one.
Put our place In Order
and maintain GOOD HOUSEKEEPING.
2. Make everyone participate and understand the city's vision.
“We envision Dagupan City as the premier center of the north for education, information technology, health, commerce and trade, and aquaculture, supported by God-loving, well-informed, healthy, self-reliant, empowered and vigilant citizenry steered by firm, decent and progressive leaders, towards a globally competitive, diversified and environment-friendly economy in a balanced, planned, attractive and safe environment”.
PARTICIPATION OF THE CITIZENRY IS ESSENTIAL. Everyone must understand and put into heart the vision of the city, even the children. Make them realize that everything being done shall be for the city and the beneficiary is everyone. Therefore all citizen's action must contribute to the attainment of the VISION. Individually it may be difficult to attain the vision but collectively the DREAM could be REALIZED.
3. Leadership must be based on example, everyone must follow the Rule of LAW. If the leader follows the law, everyone follows.
He focused on Accountability of City Officials and Transparency. The leader must show that he makes every decision based on what is good for the city. The leader must put the interest of the city first. There is no room for Conflict of Interest. This way, everyone will know that all actions are accounted for. No one from the ranks will dare do sidelines as this destroys the foundation of what is good for the organization. Sidelines breed a culture of self interest.
4. EVALUATE. There must be a reasonable period when to assess where the city is compared to its vision. Everyone must have passion in contributing for the DREAM CITY.
5. Educate the people on taking the bitter medicine, making them understand that CHANGE is GOOD. The world is changing, people must understand that letting go of the old ways is a blessing in disguise. We must give way to new ideas. The secret to happiness is knowing when to let go.
Life becomes meaningless if we stop dreaming.The realization of our dreams is what keeps us going. The common dream is what will make people come together and work together.
The vision is owned by everyone. Everyone has a stake in it. The city will be a city where everyone who has gone afar shall wish to return and live in it. Dagupan will be what the people make it.
